The Saale Cycle Route between Saalfeld and Naumburg forms a two-day tour with an overnight stay in Jena. The regular stages are described as approximately 59 and 51 kilometres. You are riding a selected section, not the entire Saale Cycle Route. For planning in 2026, it is particularly important to note that there is a closure before Naumburg, so around 110 kilometres is only the base distance without the current detour.

Important information for 2026

As of: 03/09/2026. The Burgenland district reports the Saale Cycle Route in Naumburg/Almrich, Am Anger, as fully closed from 03/03/2026 until presumably 30/11/2026. The recommended detour is via Weinberge – Weinstraße – Roßbach – B180. Check the official closure notice for Almrich again before your trip and follow the current signage. The expected end date is not a confirmed reopening.

The length and elevation profile of this detour are not included in the following stage figures. An old GPX track must not lead you through the construction site. If the detour route is unsuitable for you or your bike, change your travel plans before setting off. Taking a spontaneous shortcut through closed areas is not an alternative.

The two cycling days

This division combines official stages 5 and 6. The distances come from the official 2024 route brochure and serve as rounded planning values. Hotel and railway-station access routes, sightseeing, and construction detours come in addition.

Day Route Regular base distance What to bear in mind
1 Saalfeld – Rudolstadt – Uhlstädt – Kahla – Jena approx. 59 km A few short, steep climbs; sufficient daylight
2 Jena – Dorndorf – Camburg – Saaleck – Bad Kösen – Naumburg approx. 51 km Rudelsburg: steep, partly stony path; additional detour at Almrich

Day 1: Saalfeld–Jena with a longer break

Start in Saalfeld with enough time to spare. If you do not arrive by train until late morning, you should not expect to fit in a full day of sightseeing as well. From Rudolstadt, the route continues through the Saale valley to Uhlstädt and Kahla. Jena is the overnight destination, not merely another stop before an additional evening section.

Choose one main stop, for example in Rudolstadt or Kahla, and keep the rest flexible. Visiting a palace or castle can involve considerably more time and elevation gain than viewing it from the cycle path. The same applies to Leuchtenburg near Kahla: it is not automatically an included, flat stop along the route. For the evening in Jena, a short tour of the city and an early meal are usually more realistic than several fixed programme items.

The official description of stage 5 mentions mostly asphalted paths, quiet side roads in places, and a few steep climbs. Nevertheless, it would be incorrect to claim that it is “always flat and traffic-free”. Pay close attention at crossings and adjust your speed to your fellow riders, luggage, and the surface.

Day 2: Via Camburg to Naumburg

From Jena, the route follows the towns along the Saale to Camburg, then continues towards Saaleck and Bad Kösen. For this stage, you should not focus solely on the shorter number of kilometres. The official route description for stage 6 explicitly warns of a steep ascent and descent at Rudelsburg and a partly washed-out, stony path.

With heavy luggage or an e-bike, walking may be the sensible decision. Remain in control and do not stop abruptly in front of other riders. If you are not used to such sections, do not simply plan to rely on more motor assistance: downhill, braking, visibility, and bike control are crucial. This section calls for particular caution in wet conditions.

Before the final section to Naumburg, you also need to check the Almrich detour. Do not plan to arrive at the station to the minute based on the regular route. You need to allow a separate block of time to visit Naumburg Cathedral; whether it fits in on the day of arrival also depends on opening hours and your actual riding time.

Train travel, accommodation, and e-bike

Saalfeld, Jena, and Naumburg have rail access. Look up your specific connection, including bicycle transport, and choose the station actually served in Jena; the city has several railway stations. Having a station at the stage destination does not mean that every train carries bicycles. Allow time for transfers, possible replacement buses, and the limited bicycle spaces on regional trains.

For your night in Jena, clarify bicycle storage and, if necessary, charging options before booking. Bring the appropriate charger and do not assume that you will be able to charge spontaneously along the way. For a Cyseekin model, check the specific total load, tyres, and transport dimensions. This plan contains no model-specific range or train-transport guarantee.

How to use the map and GPX correctly

On the ADFC route page, you will find the GPX download and planning information. Select the Saalfeld–Naumburg section and compare it with the official stages and the current construction situation. The stage pages also link to the construction overview and brochures. Save the map offline, but do not treat old files as current authorisation to use the route.

Check the weather, closures, and train alerts the evening before. An additional paper or offline overview can help if you need to compare the official detour notice with your planned route while travelling. No precise total elevation gain is intentionally given here because there is no uniformly surveyed track that includes the 2026 detour.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an easy tour for complete beginners?

Not necessarily. Two consecutive cycling days, the section at Rudelsburg, and the current detour require some reserves. Try a comparable tour with luggage beforehand.

Is it exactly 110 kilometres in 2026?

No. Around 110 kilometres is the regular base distance. The detour at Almrich and your approach and departure routes will change the actual distance ridden.
