Why isn't a wide bicycle saddle automatically more comfortable?

How I measure my sit-bone width at home

Firm corrugated cardboard produces two pressure points. The distance between their center points is measured; if the impressions are unclear, I repeat the measurement.

Choose a firm surface

I place a piece of corrugated cardboard on a level, hard stool or a stable low surface. A soft sofa will distort the impression.

Sit down with pressure

I sit centered on the cardboard and briefly increase the pressure so that two clearly visible indentations form. This method is only a home test, not a professional measurement.

Mark the center points

For each impression, I determine the center point. I do not continue measuring unclear or overlapping marks; instead, I start again.

Measure from center to center

Using a ruler, I measure the straight distance between the two center points and record it in millimeters.

Repeat the measurement

I repeat the process at least once. If the results differ significantly, I have the width checked at a specialist retailer or during a bike fitting.

Combine with riding position

The measurement alone does not determine a saddle. Manufacturers assign the value to a suitable size together with the intended use and riding position.

What role does the riding position play?

More upright

The pelvis is more upright; the sit bones contact the saddle farther back and usually farther out. City e-bikes and comfort-oriented everyday bikes therefore often need a different support surface than sporty bikes.

Moderately forward-leaning

In a typical trekking or commuting position, the contact point shifts slightly forward. The width and shape must balance support and legroom.

Sporty, forward-leaning

The farther the upper body moves forward, the farther forward the contact point lies on the V-shaped pelvis. In that case, a large outer saddle width is particularly uninformative.

Width, padding, and adjustment work together

A properly fitting saddle can feel uncomfortable if it is too high, tilted sharply forward, or pushed too far back. Conversely, additional padding will not correct the wrong width. I therefore change only one adjustment at a time and then ride a short, familiar route.
