The arrow on the tire sidewall does not point forward when it is at the bottom on the ground. It indicates the direction in which the tire rotates while riding forward. How to correctly read the direction of rotation of bicycle tires
Look for a small arrow and terms such as “ROTATION” or, on older models, “DRIVE” on both tire sidewalls. According to the Schwalbe technical FAQ, this marking is authoritative for directional tires. Install the arrow so that the tire rotates in the specified direction when riding forward.
Before removing the wheel, take a photo of the side while it is still installed. Then mark the arrow and position on the rim with a removable piece of tape. Do not apply permanent paint to the braking surface, tire, or rim. With disc brakes, you can also identify which wheel was installed at the front or rear by looking at the disc rotor side.
How to check the direction without guesswork
- Securely position the bicycle and establish the forward direction.
- Look for the rotation arrow on the tire sidewall; check both sides.
- Look at the top point of the wheel.
- At the top point, the arrow must point in the direction the bicycle is traveling.

At the lower section of the tire, the same correctly installed arrow appears to point backward because this part of the tire is moving directly toward the ground as it rolls. This is not an installation error. If you look only at the contact patch, it is easy to accidentally turn the tire around.

Why the direction of rotation can be more important for MTB tires
Schwalbe explains that the direction of rotation for road tires may primarily have aesthetic reasons, whereas it is considerably more important functionally for off-road tires. This does not mean that every road tire may be mounted in either direction. If an arrow is present, it is followed. No arrows found: What now?
First, the entire sidewall is cleaned and slowly inspected in good light. The marking may be small, embossed in black, and hidden next to size or pressure specifications. A product photo of a similar-looking tire is not sufficient. Tread variants, generations, and sizes may be marked differently. Front and rear tires in a series may also have different designations. If in doubt, the serial number or exact sidewall marking is checked against the manufacturer’s documentation.
Mounting preparation: size and condition first
Before checking the direction of rotation, it is verified that the tire and rim are compatible at all. The ETRTO size on the tire sidewall must match the rim seat. An arrow does not make an incorrect size compatible. The permitted rim width, inner tube size, or tubeless approval also remain separate criteria.

The tire is checked for cuts, visible carcass, porous sidewalls, and foreign objects. The rim tape must fully cover the holes and must not have shifted or be damaged. Sharp edges on the rim bead seat or valve hole are not concealed with a new inner tube; instead, they are assessed professionally.
On e-bikes, a wheel may be heavier or require additional work due to the motor connector, torque arm, gears, and brake. The bicycle and drive-system manufacturer's instructions determine removal, connectors, axle retention, and torque. Install a tire with an inner tube in the correct direction
- Deflate the wheel: Release all the air and remove it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Fit one tire bead: First place the tire into the rim on one side and align the rotation arrow.
- Prepare the inner tube: Inflate the suitable inner tube slightly so that it takes shape but remains flexible.
- Insert the valve: Guide the valve straight through the rim hole; place the inner tube in the tire without twisting it.
- Install the second bead: Start opposite the valve and work around into the center of the rim. Do not use sharp tools.
- Check for pinching: Pull back the tire sidewall and check that the inner tube is not trapped anywhere between the bead and the rim.
- Inflate slowly: Apply a small amount of pressure initially, center the tire all the way around, and only then continue inflating within the manufacturer's specifications.
- Install the wheel: Install the axle, brake, gears, and any motor connection exactly as described in the instructions.
Tire levers made of suitable plastic can help with removal, but should only be used for installation if permitted by the manufacturer and the installation method. Screwdrivers or metal levers can damage the inner tube, tire bead, rim, or rim tape.
After installation: four checks
1. Rotation arrow
Rotate the wheel in the forward direction and observe the arrow at the top. If there are separate arrows, the selected marking corresponds to the front or rear wheel.
2. Tire guide line
Many tires have a fine circumferential line near the rim. Its distance from the rim should be even all the way around. If it dips at one point or the bead lifts, release air and correct the seating.
3. Valve and pressure
The valve is straight. The pressure remains within the tire and rim specifications and takes the system weight and intended use into account. This article does not replace an individual pressure selection.
4. Clearance and brake
The wheel is rotated freely. The tire, mudguard, frame, and fork must not touch one another. The brake must function correctly; with rim brakes, the pads must not rub against the tire, and with disc brakes, the disc must remain free of grease and assembly paste.
